Everything about blogging!

online blogsA blog is a shortened form of the term web log and it is basically a website where the latest entries are displayed first. Blogging is the act of maintaining or adding entries to such a website.

A blog is usually created by a single author and it can be about whatever subject he or she wants it to be about. It can, for example, relate to a particular news item or new technological development or it could just be a diary. The format is variable and ranges from plain text and images, to links to other websites or blogs. The most important part of many blogs is that anyone who reads it can add their comments to it.

A band for instance may have their own website to advertise their forthcoming gigs and promote their latest CD. If they had a blog, anyone who was interested could join the blog and post comments – maybe they saw the band at a particular venue and have some constructive criticism; perhaps they are having difficulty purchasing recordings. Replies and additional entries need not be by the Band (i.e. the author), but could be anyone who has some input.  If the band is on tour, they may decide to keep their fans updated with an online diary of their itinerary and amusing incidents with photos to match.

Blogging is a recent innovation and has only been with us for the past ten years or so, but it has grown at such a rate that specialist software (commonly known as blog software or simply blogware) became available on the market in 1999 to aid with the creation and maintenance of blog websites. Some packages are discussed in a later section.
